The Tale of the Shepherd Boy

Deep within the captivating rolling fields, lived a shepherd boy. His existence was essentially unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was to look after his flock of ewes.

Their low murmuring and the whispering of the breezes across the single tree on the peak were his main associates. Day after day, watching over his responsibilities inculcated in him a notion of calm satisfaction.

However, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. During one such occasion because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous plan.

Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.

One afternoon he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.

The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This game laughed for a few days more. However, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to The shepherd boy story teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of false alarms.
